Murat Yakin stays as Switzerland coach for Euro 2024 despite winless run and tension with players BERN, Switzerland (AP) — Switzerland coach Murat Yakin has kept his job for next year’s European Championship after the national soccer federation on Tuesday resisted calls to fire him.The Swiss qualified for Euro 2024 despite a run of eight qualifying games since June when the team beat only Andorra. Leads were wasted by conceding late goals amid reports of tension between the coach and senior players Granit Xhaka and Manuel Akanji. The vote of confidence came four days before Yakin is due at the Euro 2024 draw in Hamburg, Germany.“Even though we have drawn four matches and lost once in the last qualifying matches, Murat Yakin has our full confidence,” Swiss soccer federation president Dominique Blanc said in a statement.Yakin’s hold on the job seemed shakier after Swiss coach Urs Fischer became available after being fired by Union Berlin, which he led from Germany’s second division to the Champions League.Speculation also centered on Lucien Favre, the former coach of Bo...

The family of an infant hostage pleads for his release before the Israel-Hamas truce winds down TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Kfir Bibas has spent nearly a fifth of his life as a Hamas hostage. The 10-month-old was taken from his home in a southern Israeli kibbutz on Oct. 7, when Palestinian militants abducted about 240 people and dragged them to Gaza.Kfir was the youngest of about 30 children who were taken hostage. Under a current temporary cease-fire, Hamas has released women, children and teens, but the infant with red hair and a toothless smile hasn’t been included on the lists of those set to be freed, according to his family. With most other young hostages already released, Kfir’s fate and that of his 4-year-old brother, Ariel, are now a rallying cry for Israelis seeking the speedy release of all the hostages. A demonstration in support of the Bibas family was held in Tel Aviv on Tuesday.“There is no precedent for something like this, for a baby who was kidnapped when he was 9 months old,” Eylon Keshet, a cousin of Kfir’s father, told reporters. “Is baby Kfir the enemy of Hamas...

Top diplomats of Baltics and Ukraine to boycott OSCE talks over Russian foreign minister’s presence SKOPJE, North Macedonia (AP) — The foreign ministers of the three Baltic states and of Ukraine said Tuesday they will boycott a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe being held this week in North Macedonia, in objection to the participation of Russia’s foreign minister. The top diplomats of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania issued a joint statement, saying they “deeply regret the decision enabling the personal participation” of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.“It will only provide Russia with yet another propaganda opportunity,” they said.Lavrov said Monday that he planned to travel to North Macedonia’s capital, Skopje, for the OSCE foreign ministers’ meeting, which would mark a rare visit to a NATO member country since Russia started its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. He also has visited NATO member Turkey, which has no ban on Russian flights. In September, he was in New York to attend the U.N. General Assembly.Ukraine al...

Partial structural collapse at Atlantic Technical College in Coconut Creek; no injuries reported Coconut Creek Fire Rescue responded to a partial structural collapse at Atlantic Technical College, a high school and post-secondary institution within the Broward County Public School system. We’re trying to clear the debris as much as possible,” he said. “We had students make sure they stay away from that area, but it’s just an overweight of debris and removal of roofing construction in that area.” Licata added that the information he provided to the public is all the knowledge he has of the incident so, the reports are subject to change.Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in co...

Gumby, a kitten with deformed legs, seeking forever home at MSPCA

Gumby, a kitten with deformed legs, seeking forever home at MSPCA BOSTON, Massachusetts (WCVB) — The MSPCA-Angell is seeking very special adopters for a unique kitten named Gumby, who arrived in Massachusetts from Texas earlier this month needing medical care and a new home.“We’ve never seen a cat quite like this,” Dr. Rebecca Fellman, MSPCA-Angell lead clinician of community and shelter medicine, said. “Both of Gumby’s back legs are severely deformed with muscle contracture that limits his joint mobility, but he still manages to get around — often on all fours.”Courtesy MSPCA-AngellShelter staff say that Gumby is very sweet and loving — even playful — and can walk and use the litterbox.“At this point, he isn’t developing any sores, and it looks like surgery may not significantly improve his mobility, so it doesn’t make sense to put him through what will be a painful process at this time,” Fellman said. The MSPCA is looking for adopters who are willing to take on the unique challenges that come with adopting a kitten with Gumby’s medical need...
