Twins shake up roster by optioning slumping Jose Miranda to Saints; Kyle Farmer returns from IL

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:29:40 GMT

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli talked of making adjustments to his roster after yet another poor performance from the slumping offense on Tuesday night. On Wednesday morning, the Twins made one big change, optioning starting third baseman Jose Miranda to Triple-A St. Paul, where they hope the 24-year-old will have a chance to reset. After a solid rookie season, Miranda has hit just .220 with a .275 on-base percentage, a .318 slugging percentage and three home runs in 35 games. His 66 OPS+ is a mark that is 34 percent less than the league average for hitter. In the month of May, he is 3 for 25 (.120). That was coupled with some subpar defense at third base.Miranda got off to a slow start in the majors last season, as well, hitting .164 in his first 19 games. That prompted the Twins to option him to St. Paul, though his stay was brief — the very same day, Royce Lewis was called up, crashed into a wall and tore his anterior cruciate ligament, prompting the Twins to bring Miranda back.Upon...

Canada needs to restore aid budget

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:29:40 GMT

Dear Editor, One in five children worldwide are now zero-dose or under-vaccinated, meaning they’ve missed out entirely or partially on routine immunization during COVID. Those are the lowest levels since 2008. And yet, in the March federal budget, Canada cut foreign aid by 15 per cent. This was myopic at a time when wise global leadership is needed. Canada should keep its promise and restore its aid budget.Randy Rudolph,Calgary

There’s bad news, good news and hope for the future. The bad news is Albertans are paying more to drive to work, heat their homes and to buy groceries, thanks to the latest federal carbon tax hike. The good news is Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s government has almost neutralized that pump price sting by suspending the provincial fuel tax. While folks in Saskatchewan are paying the federal carbon tax and the provincial excise tax, costing them a combined 29 cents extra per litre of gasoline, Albertans are only paying federal taxes, giving us the cheapest fuel prices in Canada. The long term hope is to ensure Albertans never have to pay a provincial carbon tax again. Here’s what happening:Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has jacked his mandatory minimum carbon tax up to $65 per tonne, with the support of the NDP.The carbon tax costs Albertans an extra 14 cents per litre of gasoline and an extra 17 cents per litre of diesel. Filling a minivan costs about $10 extra and filling up a pickup tru...
